Political Parties call for the restitution of embezzled funds and assets

Political parties, trade unions, and independent figures affirmed on Thursday the necessity of recovering the embezzled assets and funds and to take a common position against mismanagement, which has been undermining Mauritania for decades and constitute a big obstacle to global development, the reinforcement of democracy, and the state of institutions.
In a communique released at the end of the meeting at the headquarters of the Party of National Alliance for Democracy, the commission declared that the efficient treatment of this problem requires taking concrete decisions to fight against it, a process which has been practically started by the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry. The latter, according to the communique, has unified components of the political class, majority, and opposition.
The commission approved of the work of the parliamentary commission and called for holding accountable whoever condemned of mismanagement, corruption, or embezzlement with no bias.
The commission added that it rejects any sort of settling of the score and reaffirm their support to the independence of the judiciary apparatus, which constitutes the latest stage of the process initiated by the parliament inquiry.
It called for the establishment of a public conscience enabling to consolidate the process of fight against corruption, expressing its hope that this meeting is a prelude to other meetings between the political parties to deepen the debate and consultations on the points raised in the communique.
The communique was signed by the parties Union for the Republic (UPR), Tawassoul, Union for Democracy and Progress, Al Karama, National Democratic Alliance, Union of Progress Forces, Gathering of Democratic Forces, Popular Progressist Alliance, Sawab, Movement of young for Country, Al Islah, Hiwar, Al Vadila, Hatem, Nidaa, Al Watan, and El Mesar.
