Mauritania: six hundred thousand people face food shortages

The world food program (WFP) representative in Mauritania, Nacer Ben Alleg, said that over six hundred thousand people (609180) would face food shortages between June and August of 2021.

“Surveys are being currently conducted to evaluate the development of the nutritional situation against the backdrop of covid-19,” he added in a speech on the occasion of Mauritania’s celebration of world food day.

He pointed out that the next evaluation of the situation, scheduled in November, would provide clear indicators for the concerned actors, and help better direct the interventions in agreement with the government.

The WFP official confirmed that in response to the health crisis, in coordination with the Mauritanian government’s response plan, the World Food Program had set its strategy to deal with the droughts since August 2020. In this regard, an additional 15000 vulnerable people have received necessary food support thanks to donors’ continuous support.

Ben Alleg noted that WFP continues its support for the Mauritanian government through establishing social protection programs to mitigate the economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on families that have become vulnerable because of the long-lasting droughts periods.
