El Guerguerat: Foreign Affairs Committee at Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay Welcomes “Sovereign” Intervention of Morocco 21 November 2020

Asunción – The Foreign Affairs Committee at the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay welcomed the sovereign actions and measures taken by Morocco which helped restore free civil and commercial movement at the post-border of El Guerguerat, expressing its support for the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom.

“We support the sovereign actions and measures taken by the Kingdom of Morocco to restore the free traffic of people and goods and we consider that it is essential to guarantee free movement at this crossing,” said the Committee in a letter signed by its president Walter Enrique Harms.
The Committee also reiterated its “full support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the only political solution, under Morocco’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity,” to this artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
Walter Harms affirmed that the Committee follows “with concern the events which occurred in the buffer zone of El Guerguerat, south of Morocco, triggered by the presence of militiamen of the armed group of the Polisario, which obstructed the traffic and carried out acts of provocation and banditry”.
“Through these dangerous provocations, the Polisario front seeks to alter the status of this buffer zone, threatening commercial activities and disrupting the political process carried out under the auspices of the United Nations, in total violation of international law and in contempt of the appeals from the UN Secretary General”, added the Committee.
The Committee called on all parties to this conflict to show restraint and prudence, in order to preserve the political process brokered by the United Nations.
