The Ministry of Justice: more than 1000 prisoners are in preventive detention

The Mauritanian Justice Minister revealed that the number of prison inmates is 2175, 1033 of whom are in preventive detention while 1142 are convicted.
In a bulletin published yesterday, the ministry said that the directorate of the criminal affairs and prisons administration work on providing the appropriate conditions for the detainees, as a part of its mission aiming at rehabilitation and integration of prisoners in society.
The ministry added that inmates’ general condition would be assessed in the light of the visits made by some legal and legislative organizations in the last days.
The Parliamentary group for humanitarian and social action had paid a visit to Nouakchott prisons in the last days. The group visited the central jail, Dar Naïm’s prison, the prison of women, and the center for minors in conflict with the law in Al Mina.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the national commission for Human rights had visited the prisons of Nouakchott and Aleg to assess the state of prisons.
Within the framework of cooperation between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the directorate of the criminal affairs and prisons, it was announced the measures of creating a radio system transmitting in the prisons of Nouakchott. The project is funded by UNDP.
